An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, most commonly in the fallopian tube.

Normally, the fertilized egg travels through the fallopian tube to the uterus, where it attaches to the uterine lining. However, in an ectopic pregnancy, the egg mistakenly implants in the fallopian tube or, in some cases, other areas like the cervix.

Unfortunately, an ectopic pregnancy is not a viable pregnancy and poses significant health risks. The fallopian tubes are not equipped to support a growing pregnancy, and as the embryo develops, the tube may rupture, leading to potentially life-threatening complications.

Noticing Signs & Symptoms

The early symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy often closely resemble those of a typical pregnancy, making it challenging to distinguish between the two in the initial stages. Common signs such as missed periods, nausea, and breast tenderness can occur in both situations.

However, as the ectopic pregnancy progresses, signs may develop that are cause for concern, including:

  • Vaginal bleeding.
  • Pain in the lower abdomen, pelvis, and lower back.
  • Dizziness or weakness.

If the fallopian tube ruptures, you may notice additional symptoms:

  • Fainting.
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension).
  • Shoulder pain.
  • Rectal pressure or bowel problems.

What To Do

Because the symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy can mimic those of a regular pregnancy, it’s crucial to seek medical attention if you experience any unusual pain or bleeding, especially in the early weeks.

Early detection is key to receiving prompt care and reducing the risk of serious complications.
